Graduate Funding
Offers of graduate admission are made to PhD applicants by individual professors if: 1) a faculty member has project funds available to support the student (in the form of an assistantship) and the faculty member feels the student has the skills that the faculty member is seeking to complete the project or 2) if a student identifies that he/she is receiving funding from an outside fellowship program, government agency or organization or 3) if he/she is self-funded for the entire duration of the PhD program and submits documentation showing proof of the appropriate funding resources. Applicants seeking a masters degree and who are interested in pursuing a research-based degree (thesis option) would be considered for an assistantship if the funds are available and the faculty member wants to extend the offer to the admitted student. Applicants seeking a masters degree who are not interested in pursuing a research-based degree will not be considered for this type of funding. Individual professors will review each application package, and will make a decision on whether or not to offer an assistantship, depending on the availability of research funds, needs of the professors and the qualifications of the applicant. Students are also encouraged to seek outside fellowships that are offered through various professional organizations or state and federal agencies. A student must submit an application for assistantship/fellowship in order to be considered for this type of funding. The application should be sent directly to the department if a student is interested in being considered to receive this type of funding.
Students are encouraged to seek external funding from various federal, state & local agencies as well as private industry & non-profit organizations.
