Objectives: Increased competition for land reclamation of marginal soils has lead to innovative ground modification techniques. Accordingly, the objective of this course is to examine these techniques and their application in Civil Engineering.

Goals: The course goals are: to inform, introduce new analytical techniques, and discuss design strategies to assist in the rational application of ground modification procedures.

Instructions for Ground Modification Term Paper

Objective – Locate a case history involving a ground modification technique; and determine:

1. Why was ground modification attempted, as opposed to conventional geotechnical methods.

2. What were the engineering considerations of the project; for example, spacing of stone columns, length of wick drains.

3. Example calculations (if possible). Attempt to apply “engineering principles” from this class and evaluate actual case history.

4. Conclusion concerning whether case history was successful, and how your calculations matched performance.
